FIRE chiefs are urging people in Trafford to attend an organised bonfire this year - rather than holding their own - during a four-day firefighters strike, which starts at 6pm this evening.

The dispute between the Fire Brigades Union and the government will continue until Tuesday, Nov 4, at 6pm.

Head of prevention at Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue, Wayne Shields, said: ““If you’re planning to have a bonfire or a fireworks display at home please think about either postponing it until Bonfire Night or better still go to an organised event."

Trafford councillor Dave Acton who is also chairman of the GMFRA added: “The strike will affect everyone and while our contingency plans remain in place it should be remembered that there will be less fire engines on our streets operated by people that are not as highly trained or experienced as our normal crew.

“For these reasons please don’t do anything that might put yourself, your friends or your family at risk. Go to an organised bonfire – it’s the safest thing.”

Matt Wrack, of the general secretary of the Fire Brigades Union said: “Firefighters are incandescent following two months of negotiations which have led to no new proposals.

“Firefighters will not stand by and see pension rights destroyed by a government which does not give a damn about the safety or wellbeing of firefighters in the long term “The public do not want 60 year olds tackling fires. Everyone understand the stupidity of these plans – except government ministers.

“We remain committed to resolving this dispute in the interests of our members and the public at large.”

Under government proposals, the union says, the firefighters will have to work until they are 60 instead of 55, pay more into their pensions and ultimately get less in retirement.
