SHOCK figures show that more than 2,000 people perished over the winter of 2013/2014, because of the high cost of heating their homes.

The figures, which were produced by the Office of National Statistics(ONS), showed that out of a total number of 18,200 deaths over last winter in England and Wales, there was 2,111 (11.6 per cent) caused by the impact of people living in cold homes.

Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com, said going into winter 2014/2015 firms were still failing to pass on savings despite falling energy prices.

Se explained: “The figures are shocking and clearly illustrate that fuel poverty remains a serious problem for many. It’s totally unacceptable that people are feeling forced to choose between their health and being able to afford energy.

“Our research reveals that 15 million households are once again planning to ration energy this winter to deal with sky-high bills."

Alarmingly, over a third (36 per cent), who cut back last year said it had compromised their health or quality of life."

She added: “Wholesale energy costs continue to fall and so energy companies must now do all they can to lower prices and make a real difference to those in greatest need.”
