GREATER Manchester’s Police and Crime Commissioner has reiterated his commitment to an independent police complaints system.

Tony Lloyd was speaking as the Home Secretary launched a public consultation on proposed reforms to the process, including shifting responsibly for managing public complaints from police forces to police and crime commissioners, and new powers for the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

He said: “My ambition is for the public to have confidence in the police complaints system, which historically has not been strong enough.

“That’s why in Greater Manchester I and the chief constable are already committed to bringing independence to the complaints process.

“But of course I welcome the necessary legal changes to guarantee that independence locally.”
