As local residents consider how to cast their vote in advance of the general and local elections on May 7, Trafford Labour has released a series of exciting policy pledges to take the borough forward over the next 12 months.

Local Labour councillors have outlined their vision in the Trafford Party’s manifesto, entitled Fighting for a fairer Trafford. The document reveals a series of flagship policies across a range of areas as the Labour Group sets out its key priorities.

Some of the highlights in the manifesto include:

  • Introducing 20mph zones around all local schools and in residential areas with majority resident support
  • A commitment to paying all council staff at least the National Living Wage, and encouraging local businesses to do the same through a Living Wage Charter
  • Class sizes of not more than 30 for infant aged children and support for all local schools
  • The introduction of an Ethical Care Charter to ensure high quality social care in Trafford
  • The establishment of a Landlord Register to ensure private rented homes are kept to a decent standard
  • A promise to return the £9,000 pay rise recently accepted by the Tory council Leader

Asked about his party’s manifesto, Councillor Andrew Western, leader of Trafford Labour Group, said: “I know that if we take control of the council after the local elections, we will have tough decisions to make and very little money to deliver the high-quality services that residents expect.

"We have committed to balancing the books every year that we control the council, but that doesn’t mean things can’t be different.

"I hope residents will see that we have set out some clear differences between ourselves and the local Conservatives, and can recognise the value of some of our policy pledges.

"We will keep council tax the lowest in Greater Manchester, and we will have to make savings, but we will do it in a fairer way; working with local residents and doing our best to protect the services that matter most to you.”
