A TIMPERLEY woman narrowly avoided being conned out of £500 because of a fault in a money wiring service.

Police are warning Trafford residents to be on their guard against fraudsters following the incident yesterday, Wednesday July 29.

A spokesman for GMP Trafford South said: “A male attended the victim’s home address and informed her he was from the Anti Fraud Squad and asked her to transfer £500 via Western Union.

“Thankfully, Western Union banking system was down yesterday and the transaction couldn't be made.

“Please make your elderly family members and neighbours are aware of this. Con men prey on the elderly and vulnerable and are can appear very plausible.”

Anyone who believes they may have been targeted by fraudsters should call police on 101 or report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.
