AN Infamous Trafford eyesore and vandalism hotspot is making way for a retail and residential development.

The scheme, on the junction of Cross Street and the A56 in Sale, was until recently occupied by the Waggon and Horses pub.

The pub closed in early 2003 and quickly fell into disrepair. It also become subject to frequent incidents of vandalism, arson and illegal flyposting.

Trafford property developer Laurus Homes has acquired the pub site and adjacent buildings, for a major development with commercial space and residential properties.

Councillor Michael Young, executive member for economic growth and planning, at Trafford Council, said: “While the Waggon and Horses was once a popular pub, its rapid demise after closing in 2003 meant it became an ugly and unwelcome part of the local landscape.

“Furthermore hundreds of thousands of people travel up and down the Sale stretch of the A56 every week, and this development will significantly improve the image of the town in general.

“I therefore welcome Laurus’ plans to redevelop the plot, as it will breathe new life into the Cross Street area and surrounding neighbourhoods.”

Phase one of the development, due to be completed this October, will consist of five three bedroom, detached family homes with prices from £299,000.

Phase two, due to complete in early 2016, will feature 10,000 sq ft of premium retail space plus 34 one and two bedroom luxury apartments.

Laurus Homes is a new residential property business created by Trafford Housing Trust.

Through Laurus Homes the trust aims to build on average over 100 new homes each year for outright sale, with profits going back into trust.
