QUEUING on the A56 is set to get even worse – Manchester Road will restricted to one lane in both directions until the end of August.

One Trafford, the partnership between contractor Amey and Trafford Council, are carrying out a widening operation on Manchester Road where it meets the Park Road junction in West Timperley.

Roadworks have been in place for some months now and have been the subject of much frustration and outrage, with long tailbacks and reports of dangerous driving.

This was heightened by the tragic death of Helena Thurm, 25, who was hit by a car at the Park Road junction on June 20, and another pedestrian being knocked down just two days later some 300 yards away.

The next phase of the controversial roadworks will begin on Monday July 4. This will see a pedestrian island installed north of Park Road and works to widen the carriageway will also be completed on the south eastern footway of Manchester Road (opposite the garage).

While these works are being carried out, traffic will be restricted to one lane in either direction along the A56 until work is complete in the end of August.

A spokesperson for OneTrafford said: “We understand that road works can be frustrating and would like to assure motorists and residents that we are doing everything we can to complete the works quickly and safely. We expect the junction improvement works and associated resurfacing to be finished by the end of August.”

One Trafford said that resurfacing work will be undertaken in the evening and overnight to reduce impact on traffic.
