FOR the second year in a row, Trafford Council has been ranked top-performing urban authority for recycling.

It has a 60.4 per cent provisional recycling, composting and reuse rate.

The One Trafford Partnership, which took over running the recycling schemes in July 2015, has maintained the council’s leading position.

Cllr John Reilly, Trafford Council’s executive member for economic growth, environment and infrastructure, said: “The One Trafford Partnership is incredibly proud its efforts have been recognised and it has been able to keep Trafford as the top-preforming urban authority for the second time.”

The One Trafford Partnership is continually looking to improve recycling rates and support the Be Responsible campaign, encouraging residents to recycle more. The partnership has a number of activities planned for Recycle Week starting with a recycle competition, a “Bling Your Bin” event and a number of other public engagement events across the borough.

This will be followed by activities in the Live More, Waste Less week that will see all council staff challenged to take part in the 101 ways to Live More and Waste Less.

A recently commissioned One Trafford Partnership waste composition study has indicated that by weight, 21 per cent of residual waste across Trafford is food waste, despite offering free caddy liners, annual calendars and a weekly food waste service. In response, the partnership are planning to deliver caddy liners to every property this autumn, and is working with the Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority to encourage greater participation through targeted door step campaigns.

Councillor Reilly continued: “We will continue to use our Be Responsible campaign and social media to raise awareness around recycling in Trafford, which is becoming a very popular means of communication amongst our residents and community builders. The effort put in by so many residents across Trafford to recycle as much of their waste as possible is remarkable. The One Trafford Partnership is incredibly grateful for their continued assistance in contributing towards a reduction in residual waste, and will continue improving the quality of its service, and encouraging recycling throughout our community.”

Waste collection across the borough is undertaken by The One Trafford Partnership, a contract established between the Council and Amey PLC in 2015.
