THEY were named after screen sirens – and aren’t they a pair of beauties.

Audrey and Rita have been at Society for Abandoned Animals (SAA) for more than a year and are looking for a loving new home.

The rabbits, estimated to be around two years old, were found abandoned in a box under a bridge in Manchester and it was clear they were not used to being handled.

SAA fundraiser Ruth Hastie said: “They are a bonded pair so need to be rehomed together however we would recommend they go to a home without young children. Children love to interact with their pets but Audrey and Rita would probably not appreciate the attention.

“As with cats we do a home check for rabbits, this is to check the security and size of their living accommodation. Many hutches sold in pet shops are simply not big enough for the job.

“We also like to discuss the dietary needs of the rabbits we rehome as it's not as simple as Bugs Bunny would suggest; before working here I had no idea that you should only feed rabbits a couple of slices of carrot per week!”

Society for Abandoned Animals, on Mosley Acre Farm, is open from 12noon to 4.30pm every day except Wednesday. If you think you can help, email office@saarescue.co.uk or call 0161 973 5318. For more information on SAA, visit saarescue.co.uk.

On Saturday, October 15, the society is holding a 5km sponsored walk, £10 per person, or as much sponsorship as you can raise. The walks start and ends at the sanctuary, and will set off at 10.30 and 2.30 (subject to change) Refreshments available. Enquiries to office@saarescue.co.uk or on 0161 973 5318.
