I’ve enjoyed gardening and the outdoors since I was a boy growing up in Timperley and there’s nothing like feeling the earth between fingers.

One of the best things about being the Member of Parliament for Altrincham and Sale is meeting so many impressive people who give of their time and expertise to run local groups for the good of the community.

In Altrincham and Sale we are so lucky to have people who do so much to make things work and whether it be community sports clubs; the various youth organisations; the Friends of our parks; or the numerous other voluntary organisations – people do so much for the community.

Next time you’re passing through Altrincham and enjoy many of the flowers and plants in the town centre, you’ll have Altrincham In Bloom to thank.

Run by Sarah Walmsley, the multi award–winning Altrincham In Bloom is a tremendous charity which brightens our everyday.

It raises money via donations; they’re currently encouraging people to donate £5 per month to contribute to their endeavours. Details of how to donate are on their website: altrinchaminbloom.org.uk.

If you, like me, enjoy gardening, it’s a great way to get out and about, boost your fitness and mental health and whether it’s town centre planters; Shaw’s Green; Four Seasons Walkway Interchange Footpath and Living Wall or Nectar Buzz stop; it’s worth getting involved.

It’s a fun way to improve fitness, make new friends and get a bit of colour in your cheeks! There are 13 projects in and around Altrincham town centre which have either been newly created or reclaimed as green spaces and subsequently improved.

As well as seeking to improve the environment in Altrincham, members of Altrincham In Bloom work hard to encourage, support and inspire the creation of new ‘In Bloom’ groups across Trafford.

They now include Timperley In Bloom, Stretford In Bloom, Urmston In Bloom, Ashton on Mersey In Bloom, Sale Town In Bloom and most recently, Hale U3A Gardeners.

Those who are being nagged to improve their own patch or who may not have their own garden, might be tempted by the welcome offered by fellow volunteers and a bit of a fitness boost – it’s cheaper than a gym membership!

Sir Graham Brady is the MP for Altrincham and Sale West.
