Trafford 2 Workington 3

TRAFFORD were desperately unlucky on Tuesday night when a freak goal in the 90th minute gave the visitors all three points.

The home side dominated possession from the kick off without threatening Workington keeper Jamieson but were rocked in the 20th minute when the visitors took the lead against the run of play, Martyn Coleman stepping inside two defenders on the left and rifling a magnificent angled drive from 18 yards that whistled inside the far post.

Trafford centre back Steve Mason then saw his header brilliantly tipped over by Jamieson before Michael Oates squandered a great chance when firing against the keeper from point blank range.

Oates then struck the outside of the post as Trafford dominated and four minutes into injury time they were rewarded for their efforts when Simon Hackney drilled a shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the area.

The play was scrappy and littered with fouls in the early stages of the second half before Shelton Payne went close with two long range efforts.

In the 78th minute Workington regained the lead when home substitute Kyle Harrop conceded possession on the half way line and Adam Telfer broke forward, cut inside and cracked a great shot inside the far post.

Seven minutes later Oates was released by Payne down the middle but with only Jamieson to beat he screwed his shot wide of the left hand post.

In the 87th minute Trafford’s pressure paid off when the visitors failed to clear a long throw by Steve Mason and Will Ahern ghosted in to head past Jamieson.

Trafford sensed victory but in the 90th minute Workington broke forward down the right and Coleman whipped in a deep cross from close to the corner flag. Somehow the ball looped over Andy Robertson in the home goal and nestled just inside the back post.

Then with the last kick of the game and Trafford storming forward in search of the equaliser, Nia Bayunu nodded the ball into the path of Oates just six yards from goal but Jamieson left his line to block the shot.

Trafford will be desperate to get back to winning ways on Saturday when they travel to Witton Albion, kick off 3 p.m, and then on Tuesday night they journey over to Merseyside for a league fixture at Skelmersdale United.
