A MAGNIFICENT unbeaten 163 from Graeme Thomason gave Ashton on Mersey a stunning five wicket win at The Beets.

Choosing to bowl first on a superb batting surface, Ashton found the Runcorn top order in fine form.

A quickfire start against some wayward home bowling saw the visitors put a run a ball 50 on the board before losing both openers.

Excellent knocks from Jarryd Phillips (94) and Will Magee (73 not out) continued to dismantle the usually potent Ashton attack, and at tea Ashton were confronted with a daunting total to chase of 263.

But the Ashton reply was stunning as they shrugged off the loss of two early wickets to thrash the Runcorn attack to all parts of the ground. Thomason was at his brutal best and in partnership with Alex Turner and Paul Eastham (44 no) he saw Ashton home with eight overs to spare.

The Ashton 2nd XI made it a double winning day over Runcorn. Runcorn 205-5 (Dan Booth 66 not out) Ashton 208-2 (Sam Gupta 98 not out. Ryan O’Brien 68).
