TRAFFORD MV took top spot in the table after a convincing 70-6 win at Bury.

Within minutes of the start MV were showing their intent with the back three combining well and forcing an early penalty which captain Ben Wheeler struck accurately for a 0-3 lead.

Bury's newly laid pitch was a good surface for MV's talented backs and constant pressure forced a further Wheeler penalty to make it 6-0.

The hosts were full of early spirit and bagged their first points of the afternoon with a penalty but scrum half Crabb intercepted and scored after a spring chase for the Bury line to lead 13-3.

Plucky Bury scored another penalty 6-13 but that was as good as it got for the hosts.

Immediately from the restart MV stunned the home side as full back Gareth Bevan fielded the deep kick and laced his way through the home defence and stroll under the posts, the extras made for a half time score of 6-20.

In the second half, some clean line-out ball was whipped along the MV back line for this season's try scoring flyer James Mattie to out pace his marker and Wheeler added the conversion again 6-27.

The flood gates were now creaking as MV's back line were in fine form.

Bevan and Matthie linked up well in midfield and Matthie's pace was again the decider as the bonus point for four tries scored came MV's way.

Wheeler popped over a further penalty to keep the scoreboard ticking over to 36-6 in MV's favour.

Matthie was on a roll and good handling opened up the defence for him again to sprint though a gap for his hat-trick try, converted to reach 6-44.

Bury struggled to cope with the pace and power of MV and Matthie notched up his fourth try and Wheeler's kick made it a 6-51.

The job was not yet done for MV and opportunities to score were there for all, with Matthie looking for another Andrew Moore was on his shoulder at the tackle to accept the pass and take the score 6-58.

Wheeler showed he could score tries as well as kick points doing his bit as captain to take a crash ball try 6-63.

The final nail in Bury's coffin came as they launched a late attack looking for some consolation - Moore tackled hard in defence the ball was spilled and MV's Crabb set of on a kick chase down the field keeping ahead of the defence to dive on the loose ball over the line killing off a despairing home side.

The final score a deserved away win which pushed MV ahead of Tarleton on points scored difference both sides having picked up 3 bonus point wins to start the season.
