URMSTON Grammar’s Year 9 girls saw off stiff competition from Winterbourne Academy to win the ‘Chance to Shine’ Under 13 national final.

Playing at Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham, Winterbourne girls set a phenomenal target of 75 runs from seven overs for the Urmston girls to surpass.

At the start of the final over, Urmston still needed 16 runs to win.

Remarkably, with one ball left that margin was down to just two.

Batsman Jessica Tasker swung at the final ball without making contact.

At the other end, Hope Longworth, made a run anyway, but Winterbourne’s wicket-keeper had intercepted the ball and had the bails off as Hope stretched helplessly in a vain attempt to reach the crease in time.

It sparked wild celebration among the Winterbourne girls but the umpire signalled a wide ball and two penalty runs to Urmston – exactly what they needed to win match and take the trophy.

Now the euphoria belonged to the Urmston Grammar Girls.

A spokesman for the club believed it was a momentous achievement in the whole of Urmston Grammar’s sporting history.

They said: “I am immensely proud.

"The girls have worked so hard for this over the last couple of years.”
