THE annual Ringway Junior Open, which was also a qualifier for the Daily Telegraph Junior Golf Championship, attracted more than 40 players from around the region and saw some fine golf played on an excellent course.

There were three main trophies on offer with the Fred Heap Memorial Trophy being shared with 70 by Henry Brogan (Lymm GC), Joshua Donaghey (Ringway) and Ben Lee (Ringway).

Ringway junior organiser Isobel Parry said: “Despite competing with a junior county match between Cheshire and Lancashire just down the road at Hale GC we had 42 entrants – including eight girls with two sets of sisters, Holly and Sophie Lee (Vicars Cross) and Jessica and Victoria Turner (Sandiway) – with handicaps ranging from scratch to 31.

“The boys and girls compete for the Heap Salver (gross) which was won by Matt Gardner (Prestbury) 75 from Josh Curtis (Ringway) 77 and James Kempster (Stamford) 78 and the Tom Harrison Scratch Trophy is just for girls and was won by Victoria Turner with 85.

“The Ringway captain, Peter Fitzpatrick, and president, Peter Collard, were joined at the presentation ceremony by Donald MacDonald and Tom Harrison, who have played a great part over many years in the development of junior golf in the region and they were all delighted with the standard of play and sportsmanship shown by all players.”

The Manchester and District Ladies' Golf Association’s team event at Chorley GC recovered well from adverse playing conditions as the head greenkeeper and his staff worked hard to ensure the course was playable.

Local knowledge proved to be the key to success as the fab four Chorley team of Corinne Crowley, Ann Pilkington, Jean Ralph and Jane Blackhurst posted the top score of 81 points.

Next in on 79 were Rochdale GC’s Sue McNiff, Sandra McManus and Barbara Nicholls with from Shaw Hill’s Sue Moult, Debbie Stead, Di Weston and Anne Dunn winning a card play-off on 78 from MDLGA president Chris Kelly (Bramall Park), Jean Nield (Bramall Park), Joan Hughes (High Legh Park) and Linda Skilton (Haydock Park).
