Reading the letter from Simon Jones (‘They are at it again’ June 30) we wonder whether he went to the same Alma Mater as Tony and whether he had the same Professor of Physics.

The Professor had a regular dictum, "Never assume anything!" Perhaps we should have remembered his advice and abided by it! If we had we would not have upset Simon.

So just a question. If given the choice of either having a supermarket with the same number of public parking spaces as the current car park or another form of development, probably houses/flats or offices without public parking, what would the respondents to Mike Freemans survey have chosen, if anything?

We note that in your feature on the supermarket plans in the same issue that a spokesperson for We Are Sale Moor Community Company assumes that independent butchers, greengrocers, bakers, chemists and florists will close if the supermarket goes ahead.

The shops not mentioned were the two rather overpriced mini markets, with very difficult access for the disabled and people with prams, who could be adversely affected, and the myriad take-a-way establishments who probably would not be affected.

Ashton on Mersey village has two supermarkets and the same type of independent shops there seem to be doing well, in fact the greengrocers we believe is the sister company of one of those at Sale Moor.

Perhaps the extra footfall generated by the supermarket might even be advantageous to the independent shops. We look forward to Simon's comments on this spokesperson's unfounded assumption.

Norma and Tony Moore,
Sale Moor
