The application for the redevelopment of Baker Street car park and library has now been submitted.

The plans show 24 luxury two bed apartments, a large chemists (the village already has two), a very large medical centre (the village already has one with extensive parking), a replacement library and now revealed is the second floor use of the building as a very large dental practice not referred to in the application.

Outrageously the developer, Citybranch, who are developing a similar scheme in Altrincham with the council, are justifying this over development by saying the existing Baker Street car park is only 28 per cent utilised. Is this a joke?

The developer is saying they will provide 117 car parking spaces (some two storey) 93 of which are for the public use. Another joke?

The council’s own guidelines for 24 apartments, the medical practice, dental practice, library and chemists show the need for 134 car parking spaces, plus disabled parking and bike parking.

The developer proposes 117 spaces where, actually, 134 are required for the development. This development wipes out the existing car parking of 125 public spaces.

Furthermore, no account is taken for those attending Orchard Court Elderly Persons home, the nursery school on Stockport road or the proposed 11 apartments on Baker Street with no parking.

I would think most residents support the retention of Timperley library and some redevelopment to fund its operation. What is proposed, however, is a profit-led over development which will devastate the vitality of the village centre.
