No doubt like many of your readers, I was bemused at Trafford Council’s response to Kevin Parker’s comments regarding the sources of funding for the supersized ‘Altrincham Gravestone’ (Town Hall hits back over £16k monolith, Sale and Altrincham Messenger, Thursday August 25).

Irrespective of where the money came from I think what most people will agree on is; ‘The Gravestone’ does nothing to improve the image of Altrincham, and it is a costly and unnecessary eyesore in a time of fiscal restraint.

Surely it would be much better to engender civic pride by spending money on maintaining our flowerbeds, parks and public spaces but no doubt the council will say this is not their responsibility, but that of Amey.

I will accept the ‘Gravestone’ has become a talking point, but so too were the then cutting edge 1960’s Hulme Crescent Flats in Manchester which were finally demolished in the mid 1990’s.
